I don't even KNOW any "Joneses"...

Who the HELL are these ‘Joneses’
and why are they so damn perfect?!

The more more I think about it and the older I get, the more I wonder how this ‘Keeping up with’ trend started. It seems to me that originality and unique attributes would be far more interesting than trying to fit some mold. Not to mention a hellava lot less stressful.

I’d like to see a picture of this so-called perfect, can’t do no wrong, exemplary family model that originally inspired the famous quote that is still widely referenced.

As a matter of fact, I’m going to pause my writing for a few minutes and see what Google and Wikipedia have to say about this!

Ok.. I’ve found what looks like the origin of the popular phrase:

Apparently, there was a comic strip by the name of ‘Keeping up with the Joneses by Arthur R. Momand.

"The outside influences are always pouring in upon us, and we are always obeying their orders and accepting their verdicts. The Smiths like the new play; the Joneses go to see it, and they copy the Smith verdict. The outside influences are always pouring in upon us, and we are always obeying their orders and accepting their verdicts. The Smiths like the new play; the Joneses go to see it, and they copy the Smith verdict, see it, and they copy the Smith verdict.”
 ~Mark Twain

I also read on Wikipedia:
Apparently, some rich folks in New York by the name of Jones thought they were better than everyone and had more money than anyone would ever need thanks to the Chemical Bank and Mason connection. They built ostentatious, massive, luxury homes that were bigger than they needed and wasted money just to show they could. And just to make others feel inadequate I presume.
That Reminds me of another important quote.

First Timothy 6:10.
For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

Hmm.. very interesting. I think I’ll just be me, and do what I like. And hopefully everyone else will do the same!

Here’s a song:

About being money hungry and how it becomes your whole focus in life...

Ok, that about wraps it up. I guess we still don’t know exactly where this phrase came from, but it sure has been around for a while.

Thanks for stopping by,
